The Dirty Dozen

the-dirty-dozen-1

While it’s not necessary to be dirty, this film tells us one clear thing: you’re stronger with a small team of specialists rather than with a big group of clones. More: you can achieve impossible missions.

We can observe this in innovation every time it comes to reach great, ambitious, disruptive business objectives. It’s a matter of mastering the market context, the behavior of the customers, the way value can be created, to go outside the standard tracks, to know the channels to reach your targets and to exploit every single advantage you have in front of your competitors, might it be in term of timing, vision or technology.

Brussels Cassandra Users

Cassandra

This last Tuesday EURA NOVA hosted an interesting Cassandra meetup. Several tech enthusiasts and Cassandra fans have met each other for two talks: I briefly introduced what are the challenges and potential solution when building a distributed graph layer on top of Cassandra, the second talk, presented by Ansar Rafique,  was a general introduction to Cassandra and some performance comparisons against MySQL. Ansar is a PhD student at the department of Computer Science of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven – Language technology and middleware taskforce (LANTAM) of the DistriNet research group. The talk presented the result of Ansar’s previous researches at Cinnober Financial Technology about factors influencing Read/Write operation in MySQL and Cassandra.

Monthly Buzz – n°4

Apart from an open source language for programming cells and the announcement of Chromecast, a small HDMI stick to stream content on your TV, July was a pretty quiet month (as usual).

“When you hold a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail!”

A few weeks ago, while we were building our high performance computing grid over Graphical Process Unit (GPU), @Nam-Luc enunciated this sentence in order to spotlight one of the most crucial element in a project, whatever it is: the potential irreversibility of a tool choice.

EBISS 2013 @Dagstuhl

This week I was with Amine and Gary at the 3rd European Business Intelligence Summer School organized in the beautiful Dagstuhl castle in Germany. I was present at the two previous editions, it is a great way to have a condensed overview of top-level research in BI. This year two aspects have caught my attention: (1) the ever increasing skills required to be a good “data worker” and (2) the everlasting ontology and semantic web power.

Monthly Buzz – n°3

June was also a very prolific month for tech-related news: the E3, the WWDC where the brand new iOS and MacOS were presented along with an impressive new Mac Pro. Even Huawei chose this month the enter the crowed place of high-end smartphone manufacturers with its P6: “the world thinest smartphone” (so far).

A Conceptual Model For Evolving Graphs Analysis

Currently EURA NOVA is leading two PhD thesis in collaboration with the CODE/WIT Lab of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Both thesis are supervised by Professor Esteban Zimànyi from ULB and Sabri Skhiri from EURA NOVA.

The goal of my thesis is to build a multidimensional analysis framework on top of NoSQL data, and most importantly Graphs. Recently our paper entitled: An Analytics-Aware Conceptual Model For Evolving Graphs was accepted for presentation on the 15th International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery – DaWaK 2013. The conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic from 26 to 29 August 2013. DaWaK is a reference conference on data warehousing bringing together researcher working on BI related topics.

In this post, I’ll give an overview of the research and contributions of this paper.

Impossibility of change?

As time goes by and information technologies infrastructures are built, historical decisions accumulate. This accumulation put constraints on architectural options for the future. In other words, the more history you have to manage, the less time you have to make your system progress. And time is money.

Innovative Cross-Pollination

collaborate-2

In the natural world, cross-pollination occurs when a bird or bee delivers one flower’s pollen to a different plant. In the same way, innovation occurs when people bring ideas from one place to another. By its special position within his clients’ organisation, EURA NOVA’s experts are in that way a factor of innovation by simply cross-pollinating EURA NOVA’s knowledge.

Monthly Buzz – n°2

This month was a very interesting month for Tech related news. I would have loved to talk about the new Jolla’s phone and the ‘Other Half’, the XBOX ONE, Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo, BBC’s Perceptive Radio or even Google I/O.
But instead I will write about the rise of Instant Messaging Apps.

CLOSER 2013, Aachen

Two weeks ago I attended the 3rd International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science, CLOSER 2013 to present a poster about cloud computing services management. I’ve detailed the topic of the poster on my previous blog post available here.

The conference took place in Eurogress, Aachen. Actually, I had the chance to follow the other conferences held in conjunction with Closer:

Three mindsets to change the game: the Walt Disney innovation process

“Innovation can be considered as the transformation of dreams into concrete and tangible things”. Thanks to this point of view, Walt Disney developed unconsciously one of the most efficient innovation process that leads the current success of its well-known company. In 1994, a scientist named Robert Dilts formalized Walt Disney’s innovation process. His work is the root of the process used by EURA NOVA today to foster creativity and innovation.

Android_Robot_outlined

One of the biggest news of the month was the announcement and release of Facebook Home. For those of you who haven’t heard about Facebook Home, it’s an Android Launcher replacement. What does it do? It basically replaces your lock screen and home screen with your Facebook newsfeed. Is it good? Well, apart some privacy concern (your newsfeed appears on your lock screen without the need to unlock the phone), it is as good as your friends are, meaning that if you have a lot of friends who love Hello Kitty, your phone will be an Hello Kitty Phone.
But what Facebook Home shows, is that Android is a very customizable platform that can be tailored to specific needs, even by removing all Google’s services (e.g.: Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nook).

Big Data Paris 2013

BigData2013

The Big Data Paris 2013 conference was held on April 3rd and 4th. I was quite disappointed by this event. Of course, I knew it was neither a scientific nor an ACM or IEEE event. I was thus coming with a solid mental preparation, ready to see marketing and business presentations.

But what I saw was incredibly far from what I expected. In order to keep this post objective, I will quickly skip the amazingly (Yes, I think this is the right term) poor level of the panel discussions and the talks. Instead, I want to summarize my overall feeling in this post.

TEDx Louvain-la-Neuve

For the first time a TEDx event was hosted in Louvain-la-Neuve last 23 march 2013. It was the 4th anniversary of TEDx and plenty of conferences were organized around the world at this occasion. Like all TED conferences, the spirit of this conference was based on the motto “ideas worth spreading”. Sixteen speakers were invited to give twenty minutes talks on various subjects going from artistic cooking, to collective awareness over politics and bad managements practices in companies. The day was divided in four parts of four talks and between the parts we had the opportunity to discuss with the speakers and the audience on an informal way.
