These past years the Graphics Processing Units have gained popularity and momentum in industrial research thanks to the parallel processing power (# of parallel core) that these offers for a reasonable price. The second reason behind this is their wide hardware availability in the consumer landscape: the sheer price cost of a GPU has favored their presence in most of the consumer devices nowadays, from mobile phones & tablets to video game systems.
IS THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS TOTALLY HUMAN CENTRIC?
Today, we see a lot of young developers and designers that grew up with technologies, new social habits and a lot of new tools that did not exist for the previous generation (actually, a generation is no more than 10 years today!).
As a consequence, entrepreneurs in their early 20’s are creating and innovating using technical stacks they have known their whole life, unaware of the details of a CPU, who Turing was and what a methodology can bring to a development project. They just create and diffuse their ideas!
… and people consume their products, get new habits and change their way of viewing/judging things.
This week I was the second IEEE Big Data conference at Santa Clara for presenting our paper “A distributed approach for graph-oriented multidimensional analysis”.
This is now a tradition, I cannot attend a conference without giving you a short summary of the trends and interesting topics of the conference.
In this blog post we briefly describe our new contribution to the big data domain, especially, graphDB benchmarking. This work was accepted for publication at 2013 ASE/IEEE International Conference on Big Data.
In this work, we presented a distributed graph database benchmarking framework. We used this tool to analyze the performance of four graph databases: Neo4j 1.9M05 , Titan 0.3, OrientDB 1.3 and DEX 4.7.

And then it’s over, 3 days at the 1st OpenNebula Conference! I took part in 18 talks, put my hands into OpenNebula core, met a lot of interesting people, enjoyed a really nice German dinner in the capital and filled my brain with tons of information and inspiration.
This week I had the chance to attend the ASE/IEEE International conference on Big Data here in Washington DC. EURA NOVA’s presence has been highly remarked as we had two papers: imGraph (big up to @AldemarReynaga) and a paper presenting our empirical performance analysis on some of the major graph database on the current market.
I spent the last week at Prague, Czech Republic, to present my paper entitled “An Analytics-Aware Conceptual Model For Evolving Graphs”. More details on the paper could be found in my previous article.

This last Tuesday EURA NOVA hosted an interesting Cassandra meetup. Several tech enthusiasts and Cassandra fans have met each other for two talks: I briefly introduced what are the challenges and potential solution when building a distributed graph layer on top of Cassandra, the second talk, presented by Ansar Rafique, was a general introduction to Cassandra and some performance comparisons against MySQL. Ansar is a PhD student at the department of Computer Science of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven – Language technology and middleware taskforce (LANTAM) of the DistriNet research group. The talk presented the result of Ansar’s previous researches at Cinnober Financial Technology about factors influencing Read/Write operation in MySQL and Cassandra.
I have been working now for more than 6 months at EURA NOVA, and this article is the opportunity for me to share what I consider to be a key factor of success regarding my integration in the company and the conduct of my work : The way we are creating links and sharing knowledge between colleagues.
A few weeks ago, while we were building our high performance computing grid over Graphical Process Unit (GPU), @Nam-Luc enunciated this sentence in order to spotlight one of the most crucial element in a project, whatever it is: the potential irreversibility of a tool choice.
This week I was with Amine and Gary at the 3rd European Business Intelligence Summer School organized in the beautiful Dagstuhl castle in Germany. I was present at the two previous editions, it is a great way to have a condensed overview of top-level research in BI. This year two aspects have caught my attention: (1) the ever increasing skills required to be a good “data worker” and (2) the everlasting ontology and semantic web power.
June was also a very prolific month for tech-related news: the E3, the WWDC where the brand new iOS and MacOS were presented along with an impressive new Mac Pro. Even Huawei chose this month the enter the crowed place of high-end smartphone manufacturers with its P6: “the world thinest smartphone” (so far).
Currently EURA NOVA is leading two PhD thesis in collaboration with the CODE/WIT Lab of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Both thesis are supervised by Professor Esteban Zimànyi from ULB and Sabri Skhiri from EURA NOVA.
The goal of my thesis is to build a multidimensional analysis framework on top of NoSQL data, and most importantly Graphs. Recently our paper entitled: An Analytics-Aware Conceptual Model For Evolving Graphs was accepted for presentation on the 15th International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery – DaWaK 2013. The conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic from 26 to 29 August 2013. DaWaK is a reference conference on data warehousing bringing together researcher working on BI related topics.

As time goes by and information technologies infrastructures are built, historical decisions accumulate. This accumulation put constraints on architectural options for the future. In other words, the more history you have to manage, the less time you have to make your system progress. And time is money.
